- Juan Ortiz
Juan Manuel Ortiz Valenzuela was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1978. He studied direction for film and television at the Universidad de Colombia, where he participated in fictional and documentary projects as cameraman and director. His short film Boom! was awarded Best Short Film at the AXN Film Festival in 2006. In addition he has made six short films that have been showed and awarded at international film festivals like BAFICI, Miami Filmfestival and Korea Green Festival.
He worked for public television in Colombia for a number of years before moving to Germany, where, supported by a scholarship of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, he completed a master in scriptwriting and directing at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln.
In 2014 he founded the Lagerfeuer Writers room, an independent collective developing projects for film and television. One of these projects, a multi-episode film project called “Festland”, was awarded a grant from the Film und Medienstiftung NRW in 2015.
In 2016 he was admitted with a scholarship of Media Europa to the inter-European postgraduate program Serial Eyes, which is run by the Deutsche Film und Fernsehen Akademie and the London Film School. With the support of showrunners like Frank Spotnitz, Steve Matthews and Nicola Lusardi, this program is focused on developing and producing premium TV series, using the system of the writers’ room.
Recently Juan was happily awarded a grant by the NRW Filmstiftung for script development and he is one of the 20 writers selected for the Seriesmania Writer’s Campus 2018.
As a writer and director, he is currently working in the development of his first feature and two drama series. He works in German, English and Spanish.
